Well, quite by accident, patriarch week has coincided with Spirit Day for It Gets Better. Today people were asked to wear purple to show their support for the LGBT community. I’ve worn purple on Oct 20th long before the It Gets Better spirit day began. Purple on Oct 20th entered my wardrobe 7 yrs ago, as a memorial to my niece, killed 8 yrs ago today. Purple was her favorite color. This days weigh heavily on me, I know it is my own fault for giving it that power… but I think some level, I’m worried more about the day when it doesn’t… when I don’t remember her laugh, or her voice.. or the way she called me “Mike.” I’m starting to lose some memories, like, why she called me Mike and not Sarah, but she did, and to this day.. it makes me smile. But I remember how she would put my hair in butterfly clips and feed me colored goldfish crackers, and I remember singing to her as I watched her small white casket sink into the ground.

I miss you Maddie.
